چکیده
In this paper, we present a numerical method to simulate the dynamics of ferrofluids in spatially traveling, sinusoidally time-varying magnetic fields. Actuation using traveling waves involves magnetic body forces and torque on the magnetic moment of nanoparticles, both of which affect the overall pumping. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Ferrohydrodynamic pumping in spatially uniform sinusoidally time-varying magnetic fields
Past work has analyzed ferrofluid pumping in a planar duct driven by spatially non-uniform traveling wave magnetic fields. Here we examine a much simpler case where the applied magnetic fields along and transverse to the duct axis are spatially uniform and varying sinusoidally with time. In the uniform magnetic field the magnetization characteristic depends on particle spin but does not depend ...
متن کاملModeling Ferrofluids in Spatially-traveling Sinusoidally Time-varying Magnetic Fields
Ferrofluids are stable colloidal suspensions of nanosize ferromagnetic particles in either an aqueous or an oil-based solvent1. In the presence of a magnetic field gradient within a ferrofluid, magnetic forces and torque are developed to drive magnetic particles, which subsequently draw along the liquid solvent carrier. This allows continuous actuation and precise positioning of the ferrofluid ...

This experiment is an example of magnetic resonance a class of experiments in which very small energy separations (typically 10−7 eV) of quantum mechanical states are determined by measuring the frequency of a sinusoidally varying magnetic field, which induces transitions between the states. Some examples of magnetic resonance experiments are: nuclear magnetic resonance [1, 8], nuclear quadrupo...
متن کاملDiffusive suppression of AC-Stark shifts in atomic magnetometers.
In atomic magnetometers, the vector AC-Stark shift associated with circularly polarized light generates spatially varying effective magnetic fields, which limit the magnetometer response and serve as sources of noise. We describe a scheme whereby optically pumping a small subvolume of the magnetometer cell and relying on diffusion to transport polarized atoms allows a magnetometer to be operate...
